WT ran into a similar problem when they launched Ground Forces although they got more internal crossover GF is still not heavily played like the air game is. They expected another WoT completely forgetting that WoT came out into a vacuum and had no real competition. My opinion on WoWP is it face planted because they never positioned it as the much better arcade flyer in the almost nonexistent advertising. Gaijin has never picked up the ball though, and RB and SB are still pretty half assed and haven't seen any major improvements since release.
This has stagnated the game because so much of it's audience is there to fly like real aircraft in a manner close-ish to the way it was actually done. The problem is WT still caters exclusively to the Arcade crowd while trying to offer a realistic environment and FM for it's planes. War Thunder was supposed to be the first high quality simulator in almost a decade since IL-2 came out to offer air combat across WW2 on an MMO level.Īircraft of WW2 don't typically work well in appeal once you reach a certain level of "balance" which is why WT flourished and WoP suffered. There are lots of games that cater to the arcade fan. Perhaps WG will one day upgrade it's outdated game engine and produce the best of both worlds. Where WG excels is it's game's simplicity and short learning curve. It's far too complex and very hard to keep track of the enemy on the battlefield. They created the game for die hard war buffs, not the common denominator. Where it fails is in it's lack of simplicity.
To be fair, WT does have superior graphics and physics to WG games.
